We love when we are able to combine skills based practice with a creative activity. We’ve done just that with our Directed Drawing Resources. Some include a writing component and some allow teachers to choose an ELA writing component to practice such as letter sounds, adjectives and story elements (to name a few!). Students get to create a drawing by following along with directions. This can be done as a whole class activity or you can set students up to work at their own pace. A lot of versatility with these resources which is a great option for teachers!
How to use directed drawings in your classroom:
- Monthly portfolio entries
- Station to practice ELA standards
- Friday fun rotation
- Practice following directions
- Help combat anxiety in the classroom (coloring helps this!)
- Easy way to differentiate ELA skills practice
- Creative way to incorporate writing practice
- Many more!

These are just a few examples. We have them all linked right here. You will find seasonal and holiday directed drawing resources that are perfect to celebrate the start of a new season, an activity for class parties or an engaging activity to keep students busy those final days before a break. Students will love the break for creativity and teachers will love the end product as well as getting in that ELA practice!
